Skchbk Lndn Concerts!

Friday, February 20, 2015

Last night my thoughtful and music-loving husband took me to the London Philharmonia Orchestra. We dressed the part (complete with fur.. .....okay faux fur) and head on over to the Royal Festival Hall on Southbank. It was beautiful. The first song they played was Ravel's Pavane for a Dead Princess.. I almost cried. Mostly because I had been told that all they were playing was Stravinsky, but they played three Ravel pieces, that one being one of them. It was gorgeous. The piano man sketched below is playing Ravel's Piano Concerto for Left Hand... so he only used his left hand. It was nuts! During intermission we went out on the balcony overlooking the river and Big Ben. After the whole concert we walked home in the rain and just marveled at the beautiful city around us. London!

Here are some of the sketches in a compilation above, and below are the ones that I thought I'd give you a better look at. Also... cello's are freaking hard to draw.

Pancake Day? Pancake Day!

Tuesday, February 17, 2015

So it's Pancake Day today in London! Supposedly this was the day (aka Shrove Tuesday) that was dedicated to clearing out the cupboards of tempting treats and baking goodies before the first day of Lent, when you give up all of those things. I think it was narrowed down to pancakes, which are now celebrated on this day, and there are many pancake races all over the city. Pancake races you ask? Yes, pancake races. Where people run with skillets and have to flip the pancake inside it at certain points.
It is kind of like a relay race.

I went to the one in Borough Market. There were a bunch of people gathered already, and I watched a bunch of different people race to the end. It lasted only about 30 minutes, and then the rest of the time we stood in line for some pancakes. I had some delicious gluten-free ones made from coconut milk.
I need that recipe.

Here's to eating as many pancakes as you can until tomorrow!!

Valentine's Poem

Wednesday, February 11, 2015

I'm feeling a bit under the weather today, but I thought I'd share some of the other photos and ideas I've been working on for Valentine's. I also stumbled across this poem and loved it.

When You Are Old
by William Butler Yeats

When you are old and grey and full of sleep,
And nodding by the fire,
take down this book,
And slowly read,
and dream of the soft look
Your eyes had once,
 and of their shadows deep;

How many loved your moments of glad grace, And loved your beauty with love false or true,
But one man loved the pilgrim soul in you,
And loved the sorrows of your changing face;

And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled And paced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd of stars.
