Style Sheets: Henri Matisse

Collaboration with Jessica Williams of Kate Spade and The House that Lars Built. Check it out here.
Henri Matisse is one of my favorite painters. Besides the fact that he is French (and you know I love everything French), I love his work. I've also seen loads of Matisse in Paris at the Louvre, MOMA, National Gallery of Art in DC, and in random spots around the world. His figures and colors are just beautiful and expressive and unpretentious. My first encounter with his paintings was when I was about 7 or 8 and my friend Caroline in Virginia had a big print of his red fish painting in her house. And just last year, when B and I were engaged and traveling back to DC and New York to see my parents, I saw the original in the MOMA.  And it was kind of one of those moments where I was like, where did I used to see that all the time.. And then a wave of smells and images and Caroline and her mom who was so artistic and wore quilted vests came back in an instant. And I remembered.

FWD- Amelia

 Did they ever find her plane?
I found this online- in a month or so they will have more proof of what happened to Amelia. It is suspected that she and her navigator Fred Noonan made a forced crash landing on a coral reef near Gardner island, where they lived and died- it was 350 miles away from their original destination- Howland Island. They have old photos they are trying to use, and there was recorded a skeleton found on the island too- which was about 5 ft 5 and mostly likely female than male.
Whaaaat! Amazing!!
As a kid, I always found this story so fascinating. And terrifying. Imagine being the first woman to fly around the world, then actually disappearing from off the face of the world- your end unknown to the world for 75 years. And JUST now, they are beginning to find out what really happened to her.
What a neat thing.

FWD: {Ernest Shackleton}

Saturday, July 13, 2013

Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, was a polar explorer who led three British expeditions to the Antarctic, and one of the main figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. I drew him for this month's Friends Who Draw. My father is a huge admirer of him, and we had this long video series with Kenneth Branagh in it, who played him. Being an explorer would have been exciting but incredibly dangerous back in the day. I feel like there isn't much exploring of the unknown these days. Though I still hear of people who find these tribes in Africa that have no idea the rest of the world even exists.

Little clip of some fun things I'm trying my hand at. STAY TUNED!

{兔 Rabbit Platter }

New 12 X 8 inch platter with white edging detail and a black painted bunny. 兔 is "tu" and "rabbit" in Chinese. The black bunny is painted with this new chalkboard paint that I wanted to try out- when this is baked you can use chalk on it... I'll experiment when I put in another batch to bake.
